Usat Liberty Wreck

Listed as the best wreck dive in Bali, the USAT Liberty remains the only wreck in the world that has been caused because of a volcanic eruption. Originally sunk by a Japanese submarine torpedo in the second World War, it lay on the beach until 1963 when Gunung Agung erupted, resulting in flowing lava pushing the wreck into the Ocean and breaking it up in the process. It now sits on the sandy bed 30 meters away from the shore at a maximum depth of 30 meters, encrusted in lava and coral allowing for extraordinarily nutrient rich waters.

Due to the nature of this dive site, there is a magnitude of interesting marine life including the red barracuda, turtles, hump head parrot fish, mantis shrimp and stingrays to name a few. There are many areas of the structure which are easy to penetrate and the way the wreck has broken apart allows for an interesting topography which is ideal for photography.

This wreck invites divers back time and time again as the vibrant environment provides new things to discover, making it one of the favorites amongst the divemasters and instructors in the area.

At night, the wreck becomes alive as lobsters creep out of their hiding places and moray eels roam around the darkness to hunt, providing a spooky and magnificent night time experience. Amongst the bigger things, you can also see the spanish dancers, mantis shrimp, pygmy seahorses and the eyes of the bobtail squid as you glide your torch across the structure.

Being one of the most popular dive sites in Bali, we always dive here quite early (in either the morning or evening) to avoid the mass of divers coming with the dive centers from southern Bali. This dive site is not to be missed during your stay in Bali.
