It is not uncommon after a dive, in an environment where biodiversity is high, to end up with an otitis infection. Even if it is often nothing serious, it is necessary to know the remedies to relieve an ear infection and prevent it from getting worse.

What is an ear infection ?

Otitis is an inflammation that can be acute or chronic and affects the ear ducts and cavities. Although it is often of infectious origin, it is not uncommon for it to be viral or linked to a change in pressure such as in a plane or during a dive. In the case of an ear infection, it is advisable to go to a doctor as soon as possible. If you are unable to go immediately, here are some home remedies.

Why can diving cause ear infections ?

Diver’s ear is a very common ailment for these apprentice fish. It results in an infection of the external auditory canal. It usually appears after repeated dives if you do not rinse and dry your ears properly. Indeed, the water is full of bacteria and other sediments that will stagnate in your ears and if you do nothing: the infection appears! In addition, if you dive in tropical waters such as Indonesia or Thailand, the warmer water will expose you to more ear infections. By the way, if you want to dive in Bali you can follow this link :

    2. Garlic and onion

Why mix the two? Well, because garlic is a powerful infection-fighting agent and onion fights infections thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. The two sets therefore form a true natural antibiotic ideal for relieving otitis externa due to diving.

Advice : Cook the garlic cloves and collect the juice. Make garlic juice by cooking garlic cloves. Steam will facilitate the extraction of the juice. Then pour 3 drops into the painful ear. As for the onion, cut it up and wrap it in a cloth. Leave it on the sick ear for 5 to 10 minutes.

    3. Boric alcohol

Last but not least, the last remedy! If an ear infection develops after many dives, ask around if anyone has boric alcohol, also known as saturated boric acid. In addition to disinfecting, alcohol will also dry out the ear canal in order to avoid maceration and thus limit the spread of germs that cause the diver’s otitis externa.

Advice : rinse and dry your infected ear and 4 to 5 drops into the infected ear. Repeat the operation several times a day, with your head bent to the side.

4. Otopain

In Indonesia, you can find in shops and pharmacies, without a prescription, a drug called Otopain. It consists of two antibiotics : an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever.

Advice : 3 to 4 drops into the infected ear during MINIMUM 20 MINUTES. Drastic remedy with guaranteed effects!

What should I do if my ear infection persists ?

If your ear infection persists, it will be essential to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Indeed, if otitis lasts, it probably means that the infection is more severe than expected and that natural remedies are not effective enough. Your doctor will refer you to an appropriate treatment.
